This last year I’ve had the opportunity to work with some very incredible women. Each wonderful individual truly has something beautiful to offer this great school and the legacy it portrays. I believe this school didn’t quit know it would live up to its name someday; however, it’s the teachers and staff that make this place what it is.

I was hired on September 4, 2009 and wasn’t quit sure what I was in store for, however, I knew I loved working with children. Fifth grade has been a challenge and a blessing. I enjoy this fragile age and do understand that these years are important. When you’re ten or eleven your self-esteem is crucial, however, this age group goes through quit few natural changes to make life even little more interesting. This is where I feel my expertise comes in handy.

I have been working for almost 15 years as a Behavioral Specialist and still find myself using these wonderful tools in the school system. Before I was working here, I contracted out my work to several psychiatrist, group homes, Gilbert School District, Chandler School District, Mesa School District and personal references by request. Crisis intervention was my specialty but it’s quit refreshing to wake-up everyday and work with wonderful 5th grade students.

I decided back in 1997 that I wanted to work with a larger group of children; but have a lengthier time frame to work with them. I knew the only way I was going to do this, was to get involved working in the school system. I first started out working as an aid at Knox Elementary School in a self-contained behavioral classroom. I knew at that time, I wanted to go back to school and get my teaching degree. During the course of six years I got married and finished my second degree.

When I was 18 years old I bought model home furniture and would resale it to the public. After three years I was able to save up enough money to start my own furniture store in, St. George, Utah. I know what it takes to run a business and how important your key people are. I believe this is why this school works as well as it does. I was successful fast; however, I knew someday I wanted to work with children.

My life has consisted of several different entities which encompasses a lot of lessons. I have grown a ton and look forward to seeing where the next couple years takes me. I believe in change and living life to the fullest, so I won’t promise I’ll be here forever, but for now, I will try to give your child a rich and exciting education. I push my students to experience life and to celebrate adversity. Most importantly, to teach children that an education is where we begin our journey and with knowledge we can conquer anything.
Mr. Zwagerman

“Mr. Z, when does a grasshopper turn into a butterfly?”
“It doesn’t unless the grasshopper is a caterpillar.”
My name is Mr. Zwagerman and I am Legacy’s newest fifth grade teacher. This year begins my sixth year teaching K – 6 in the Valley of the Sun. I’m especially interested in teaching primary grades because I get to teach kids literature, geography, history, science, reading, writing, math, and, ah, about caterpillars, too.
For the past 18 years, I have been teaching with Maricopa Community College District in the field of communication studies. I taught public speaking, small group, and interpersonal classes during my time as associate faculty. I received an associate’s degree from Mesa Community College, a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University, a master’s degree from University of Montana, and, my favorite, an honorary degree from Ballard High School in Huxley, Iowa. I am so excited about learning that I still take classes so I can continue to find out about new things to share with the students.

My family has called the East Valley home for more than 20 years and we value family involvement in a child’s education. I welcome the opportunity to teach with the great faculty and staff at Legacy School. I am confident and look forward to a great and memorable year teaching in the Legacy School community.
