Mrs. Hannam
My name is Becky Hannam and this will be my second school year here at Legacy Elementary School. I will be teaching First Grade and am happy to be a part of such an exciting time for our school as we move to our new building this year!
Before I came to Legacy, I worked for Mesa Public Schools for ten years in various grade levels. While my children were in grade school and junior high school, I worked as a substitute, long term substitute and with community education both as a Kindergarten and a Pre-Kindergarten teacher. My children are the reason I fell in love all over again with school. When I was young, I loved and enjoyed going to school. Once I had my own children, I realized how much I was interested in teaching and went back to school for a Post Baccalaureate Teaching Program. I now have the full SEI endorsement and my teaching certificate from the state of Arizona will arrive in the mail soon. I am now on the way toward my Masters degree. My undergraduate degree is from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. I have a B. S. in Journalism/Mass Communications with an emphasis in Advertising, Public Relations, and Marketing.
I live in Mesa with my family and two big dogs, Ada and Bubba. My daughter, Erin, is 17 years old and will be a senior this year at Mountain View High School. She swims on a synchronized swim team. We spend a lot of time at the pool being proud and cheering her on! My son, Sean, is 24 years old and out in the working world! Look for him at the Cheesecake Factory restaurant! Enjoy your child now because it is true what they say…time flies and then your children graduate! My husband, Mike, works for Pilot Travel Centers in facility revenue, which is a different way to say he helps them take care of some of their money. As a family we like to go camping in the mountains or sand dunes and, of course, we love to go to the beach in California! I also enjoy reading, traveling, and spending time with good friends.
I look forward to meeting all my students and their families. See you at LES…home of the Lions and Core Knowledge!

Mrs. Sonive
My name is Dianne Sonive and I will be joining the educational team at Legacy this upcoming 2009-2010 school year as one of the first grade teachers. I was born and raised in Espanola, New Mexico, a small town north of Santa Fe. A beautiful place to grow up, fishing, camping, boating, skiing, and most of all spending precious time with my HUGE family. I have been in Arizona since 1989 so Arizona is home now. The past two years I was a Reading Coach at a small charter school in Apache Junction where I worked very closely with Kdg.-3rd Grade teachers/students implementing the Arizona Reads-Reading First Program. I managed the Reading Intervention Team and helped to provide reading intervention to over 200 students. The Reading First Grant has come to a close so that has placed me back in the classroom which is where I love to be, teaching young students how to read and write and add and subtract and…..( the list goes on forever)!!!
I will be starting my 21st year of teaching. Most of my teaching experience has been in elementary education, 1st – 3rd grade. After graduating from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces with my BA in Elementary Education and an Early Childhood Endorsement I moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1989. I taught for Mesa Public Schools for about 10 years and then decided to make the move into the fast growing charter school systems. I continued to further my education and received my MA in Elementary Education and Clinical Reading Endorsement from Northern Arizona University in 1995. I spent the first two weeks of my summer completing a 45 hour SEI/ELL class where I learned SO MANY new teaching tools for my Tool Box that I can’t wait to try out in our classroom. The past two years in working as a Reading Coach also gave me many opportunities to receive numerous professional development hours in so many different and successful reading techniques that I will be using in connection with the reading curriculum.
I am married and have three children. My oldest boy, Caleb Mendoza, will be a senior at Red Mountain High School and he is our baseball star in the family. He has been playing since he was 3 years old and we all think he is pretty good. His goal is to make Red Mountain’s varsity baseball team this upcoming year and get ready for the big college hunt. We enjoy going to Caleb’s games and many nights you can find me sitting in the stands grading papers while we cheer him on! I also have a soccer star in my family. My 8 year old son, Jaden Sonive, has decided that soccer is lots of fun and that he can kick the ball super hard! He will be beginning 3rd grade at Mendoza Elementary this year. He loves to swim and is our creative artist and awesome performer. Jaden is Mom’s best Travel Buddy. We just got back from spending two weeks in Northern New Mexico where we were fortunate enough to visit and play with lots of cousins & friends. We spent our last three days at Elephant Butte Lake fishing, boating, and relaxing on the shore where the days were nice and the nights were chilly. As we traveled back to Mesa, we watched our thermometer in the car get higher and higher. Last but not least, I have a beautiful 27 year old step-daughter named Sara Sonive who lives and works in Phoenix. We love to get together for cook outs with her and her awesome boyfriend, Sergio Villa. I am lucky to be blessed with such a wonderful family! As a family we love to go camping, boating, fishing and spend long days at sandy California beaches watching the sunset!
I am excited to start the upcoming school year at Legacy Charter Schools and be part of the celebration in the opening of the new school site. What an AMAZING place it will be to learn so many new things and meet so many wonderful new faces. My philosophy of teaching in the primary grades is to include a strong phonetics based reading, language, and spelling program. I enjoy integrating the curriculum within all areas so the children can see the connection between reading, writing, math, science & social studies. I use whole group instruction and also break into small groups for more direct intervention to help all students reach mastery. First grade is an exciting year; we will be learning new things and enriching our minds each day in the classroom. I believe that every child will be successful in my classroom and learn at their own pace with my direct guidance. I will guide and teach the students in a positive learning setting. We will learn how to get along with others and work as a team. We will respect each other and respect each other’s right to learn. Your child is the future and I will guide and teach them throughout this upcoming 2009-2010 school year to help them excel to the best of their ability.
I look forward to meeting each of you and getting to know you and your family as the school year begins. Please don’t hesitate to stop by and say hello.
