The Four S's of Core Knowledge

Solid

Core Knowledge believes and teaches that there are basic SOLID principals of learning and that this knowledge should be passed on from generation to generation. Some of these SOLID principles would be our constitutional government, elements of science, important and key events history, masterpieces in art and music, essential elements of mathematics, oral and written communication and expression. Even in the fast paced world that we live in there is a body of lasting knowledge that will never be outdated.

Sequenced

Knowledge teaches knowledge builds on knowledge. Children learn new knowledge by building on what they already know. Only a school system that clearly defines the knowledge and skills required to participate in each successive grade can be excellent and fair for all students. For this reason, the Core Knowledge Sequence provides a clear outline of content to be learned grade by grade. This sequential building of knowledge not only helps ensure that children enter each new grade ready to learn, but also helps prevent the many repetitions and gaps that characterize so many schools.

Specific

The Core Knowledge Sequence is distinguished by being SPECIFIC. By clearly specifying important knowledge in language arts, history and geography, math, science, and the fine arts, the Core Knowledge Sequence presents a practical answer to the question, "What do our children need to know?"

Shared

Core Knowledge also teaches that literacy depends on SHARED knowledge. One of the many goals of the Core Knowledge Foundation is to provide all children, regardless of background, with the shared knowledge they need to be included in our national literate culture. This includes sayings like, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.” “Don’t count your eggs before they hatch.” “Take it with a grain of salt.” and “David knocking of Goliath.”
Legacy Schools uses the nationally acclaimed Core Knowledge Curriculum of Instruction.  You can read more about Core Knowledge at their website:
